"NYC CORE is disgusting. The entire chapter needs to be purged or better yet disaffiliated."

This is a 1962 evaluation by CORE official Mary Hamilton of the Harlem chapter of CORE. Hamilton, who was originally a member of the chapter both downtown and uptown, had by this time become a national CORE official as one of the heads of CORE's Metropolitan Area Coordinating Council (MACC), an inter-chapter organization responsible for coordinating amongst the various New York City CORE chapters.

Her evaluation is quite telling. A central characteristic of the Harlem chapter of CORE is severe in-fighting from day one to its last days. At the time, three members were in the process of being expelled over various disagreements with other members. Here, Hamilton refers to the chapter as 'NYC CORE':
