photo of Harlem CORE member Cyril Harvey
Description
This is a 1965 newspaper photo of Harlem CORE member Cyril Harvey. At the time he was the chairman of the Employment Committee. During the day, he was a wholesale liquor salesman in Harlem.
Harvey is especially significant as he was seen as 'the driving force' in a protest campaign against the Ballantine Beer Company which continued even after the West Essex chapter of CORE came to an agreement with Ballantine to discontinue the demonstrations. As a result, Harlem CORE was suspended at the beginning of 1965 for a month by the national CORE office. This came after a year where they were threatened at least twice with suspension for their participation on the 2nd school boycott of 1964 and the World's Fair Stall-In.
