Description
This is a 1962 newspaper photo of New York CORE member Joanne Shane. At the time she worked directly under Gladys Harrington. As the de facto office manager, Shane handled much of the Harlem chapter's day to day administration and would have been the one person in the office on a daily basis. She left the chapter soon after Harrington's term as chairman ended.
A White woman and 'red diaper baby', she was a participant in the Freedom Highways project and in the Route 40 Freedom Rides. She was one of the three principal investigators (along with Freedom Rider Travis Britt, who she was dating at the time) for Freedom Highways.
She demonstrated with members like Sheila Michaels (her roommate) and Susan Wells in many of the early housing protests. She also organized dozens of buses for the trip down to the March on Washington.
