Description

This is a 1970 newspaper photo of Harlem legend Basil Paterson. Like Percy Sutton, he was in house attorney for Harlem CORE, member of the Advisory Board and the the chairman of Harlem's NAACP.

As a member of the Gang of Four (Harlem's Democratic Clubhouse), he was a New York State Senator, a Deputy Mayor under Mayor Ed Koch and the Secretary of State of New York. Harlem CORE members Quincy Boykins, Donald Elfe and Tony Spencer have all worked for him at different times.

He is also the father of New York Governor David Paterson.
