Description
This is a 1993 photo of Harlem CORE member Donald Elfe (left) with CORE founder James Farmer (center) and Prof. Preston Wilcox, sociologist at Columbia University, 'Known as "the father of school decentralization" in New York City, and "the leading theoretician of the community control movement," Wilcox was at the forefront of the campaigns at Intermediate School 201 in Harlem' (nypl.org)
The event is a Washington, D.C. dinner celebrating Mr. Farmer's 73rd birthday.
Mr. Elfe, Harlem born and raised, came into Harlem CORE as it switched to being a Black Power group. Older cousin to Harlem CORE chairman Leonard DeChamps, he first came into the organization because his aunt asked him to see why deChamps was spending so much time with Harlem CORE. He became one of its most active members and he participated in several demonstrations, including the I.S. 201 protests.
As a result, he became the Chairman of the Manhattan chapter of the New York Black Political Assembly, an outgrowth of the national Black Political Conventions of the 1970's. He also served as political aide to NYC Deputy Mayor Basil Patterson and State Senator Sidney Von Luther (who took over the position from Patterson).
Along with Harlem CORE chairman Jerome Smith, he was also one of the leaders and founders of Central Harlem High School. Like many of his cohort, he stopped participating in CORE activities in the early 1970's. He still considers himself a member of CORE.
