Description
This is an ad from the Amsterdam News, the paper that documented Harlem CORE better than any other periodical, from 1966. This is included because the chapter is listed here as Harlem CORE (as opposed to New York CORE) and lists the address to their office.
Originally named New York CORE, it is also referred to in the press as Harlem CORE as early as 1962. It was also sometimes referred to in the media as 'NYC CORE' and the Manhattan chapter of CORE.
By 1964, papers like the New York Times referred to the chapter as Harlem CORE more frequently. By 1966, this seems to be the accepted name of the chapter, although there are still references its own literature and in the press to the chapter as New York CORE and New York-Harlem CORE.
The majority of members who I have spoken to such as Owen Cahill and Jocelyn Jerome Boyd and Bob Harris have referred to it as Harlem CORE and state that was the norm. Other members such as Evie Rich and Joanne Shane insist on it being referred to as New York CORE and state that was the norm amongst their respective 'cliques' (smaller groups within the group).
