Description
This is a 1963 photo of New York CORE chairman Gladys Harrington with Herman Ferguson (far right). To her left is Merle Stewart, to her right is legendary NYC disc jockey Hal Jackson, a friend of the Harlem CORE. His name also appears on the membership list for New York CORE before it moved uptown to Harlem. In the photo they are looking at a program for a rally in support of Ferguson’s Rochdale Movement. His group came about as a result of his involvement in that summer’s demonstrations at Rochdale Village in Queens. His involvement marked the beginning of his career as an activist. He later became the education chairman of South Jamaica CORE.
Ferguson first came to the public’s attention for climbing a construction crane and chaining himself to it during the Rochdale demonstartions. Everyone who participated in the action and was arrested with him were all from Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island CORE. The action became a trend in CORE as several other members copied it, including Gladys Harrington, who was arrested a month earlier for crane climbing at a construction site in Foley Square.
