This is a May 17, 1960 photo of New York CORE member Darwin Bolden (Black male, front, glasses, hat). The former chairman of New York CORE when it was still in midtown, he remained an active member once the chapter moved uptown.
According to the New York Times, he was a graduate of Syracuse University and the Yale University Law School. He was also a former national executive director of the Interracial Council for Business Opportunity, served as a member of President Nixon's Minority Enterprise Advisory Committee and was the president of the Pan African Business Information Center.

Pickets representing the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), give handbills to passerbys as they patrol before the building housing the main office of the S. H. Kress Company (114th 5th Avenue) in New York, May 17th. The organization is demanding integration of lunch counters in the dime store chain's Southern branches. As the pickets walked, the Kress Company was holding its annual stockholders meeting in the building. Signs say "End Lunch Counter Discrimination."
