This is the 1961 arrest photo for New York CORE member Ruth Moskowitz as a Freedom Rider in Jackson, Mississippi. At the time, she was 25 years old.
Originally from Brooklyn, she first joined CORE as a Freedom Rider and served a few weeks in jail behind her action. Once she was released, she came back to New York and became an active member in New York CORE before returning to Mississippi to work on the Freedom Project as a law student with legendary human rights attorney, William Kuntsler. She also participated in the Route 40 Freedom Rides.
