Description
This is a famous photo of Mary Hamilton, CORE Field Secretary, Freedom Rider and CORE's first female Southern Regional Director.
A member of the chapter before they moved uptown, she was one of the original active members of New York CORE. She was also leader in and secretary for the Metropolitan Area Coordinating Council (MACC), an inter-chapter organization responsible for coordinating amongst the various New York City CORE chapters. By the mid 1960's, there were as many as sixteen different chapters in New York City.
Well known for her organizing work in the south during the early 1960's, she also became chairman of her hometown's local CORE chapter, Denver CORE.
She eventually came back to New York and worked as a union organizer and school teacher in Westchester.
Mary Hamilton passed in 2002.
