Description
This is a photo of Harlem CORE member Ralph Poynter with his wife well known human rights attorney Lynne Stewart.
Like South Jamaica CORE's Herman Ferguson, Poynter when interviewed stated he was never a member of CORE in that he did not apply to become a member. The members of Harlem CORE's Black Power group, however, did consider him a member.
Originally from Pennsylvania, he was graduate of Duquesne University with a Master's degree in music education. He was working at P.S. 175 in Harlem as a 5th grade substitute teacher in the mid 1960's when the struggle for community control of the city's public schools first erupted. In fact, he was part of the very first demonstrations in Harlem over the issue. As Brooklyn CORE had at JHS 271 in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, he and ten other teachers in 1967 took over PS 175 and physically fought with police during the protests. He also was involved with the demonstrations at JHS 271 in Brooklyn and at IS 201 in Harlem.
He eventually served time on Riker's Island for a few months after punching a police officer in the face during the demonstrations.
Lynne Stewart, his wife, was a librarian at PS 175 where he worked as a teacher and where the protests started. She is also a well known human rights attorney who has been imprisoned since 2005 on charges of conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists, specifically the ‘blind Sheik’ Omar Abdel-Rahman said to have instigated the first bombing of the World’s Trade Center in 1993. She was also the attorney for Columbia University CORE's David Gilbert for his role in the 1981 Brink's Robbery as part of the Weathermen.
It should be noted it was members of Harlem CORE, both 'nationalists' and 'civil rights' types, who brought her to my attention and speak very highly of her. Both Wendell Rachell and Joe Jackson of Harlem CORE worked with Stewart and Poynter on the Lower East Side after they left Harlem CORE in the 1970's.
