Description

This is a photo of a Harlem CORE member on the picket line 1966. It is refereeing to the attempted assassination of James Meredith during his March Against Fear in June 1966. The response by CORE and SNCC specifically is noted by many historians as the start of the Black Power movement.
Her sign states she is a member of 'NY CORE'. The chapter was originally named 'New York CORE'. Once the chapter moved to Harlem, it was also referred in CORE as 'New York-Harlem CORE' 'Harlem CORE' and 'NYC CORE'.
James Farmer, for example, in his autobiography refers to the chapter as 'Harlem CORE' in describing the Harlem riots of 1964.
By 1964, papers like the New York Times refer to the chapter as Harlem CORE more frequently. By 1966, this seems to be the accepted name of the chapter, although there are still infrequent references to the chapter as New York CORE and New York-Harlem CORE in the press and internal CORE documents.
