Title
photo of the 'Gang of Four' by Harlem CORE member Tony Spencer
Description
This well known photo of (left to right) David Dinkins, Basil Patterson, Percy Sutton and Charles Rangel, often referred to as the Gang of Four, leaders of Harlem's legendary political machine, was taken by Harlem CORE member Tony Spencer.
Both Percy Sutton and Basil Patterson in particular were friends of Harlem CORE and members of its Board of Advisers. All four were involved in activities of Harlem CORE during its time.
According to Tony Spencer, he took the photo as he saw them walking down the street by chance. The fact he was able to capture the photo says something about his relationship (and perhaps that of Gladys Harrington, as well) to the group. I have yet to see him credited in the many times it has been posted on the internet.
