Description

This is a 1972 photo of Harlem CORE member Tony Spencer. He is also the son of Harlem CORE chairman Gladys Harrington. This is information that I did not find anywhere in the records or documentation of New York CORE or Harlem CORE. It came about through an oral history interview that I conducted with Harlem CORE members Bob Harris and Donald Elfe.

The 'all-American boy', Harlem style, he is exactly what CORE was trying to accomplish by coming uptown and working within the local community - to produce and develop leadership. His is a classic Harlem story. Adopted by Gladys Harrington, he became a very active member in Harlem CORE by fifteen. Participating in campaigns as early as 1963, he eventually became a nationalist. He left Harlem CORE by 1969 and went into the Air Force, serving in Vietnam War.

The photo marks his election as president of the student government at City College/CUNY. It also speaks to his long career in politics and as a community leader.
