letter complaining of Malcolm X being at a New York CORE meeting, 1962
Subject
Malcolm X
Description
This is a letter from New York CORE member J.W. Franklin, Jr. (also known as "Buddy") to the CORE national office complaining about Malcolm X coming to speak at one of New York CORE's general meetings for members and the public. Franklin at the time was a member of New York CORE's Executive Committee and Chairman of the Finance Committee.
Malcolm X was invited to the meeting by fellow Executive Committee member Edward Mollette, a move 'endorsed' by New York CORE chairman Gladys Harrington.
The letter is part of a larger document, a letter of general complaint concerning the chapter. What is most interesting is that it is dated February of 1962. It demonstrates within the first few months of the chapter having moved to 125th street, Malcolm X made direct contact with New York CORE and apparently had a noticeable effect.
