Description

This is a photo of Gladys Harrington, New York CORE's first chairman (1961-1963) and the Northeast Regional Representative for CORE at this time.
She was chairman when the chapter was still in midtown Manhattan and remained chairman of New York CORE when the chapter moved to Harlem. She was approximately 30 years old at the time.
Originally from Gainesville, Florida, she did her undergraduate work at Florida A+M and further study at Fisk University. She also participated in the 1956 Tallahassee bus boycotts.
A social worker by day, she became the mother of Harlem CORE member Tony Spencer who is her adopted son. She also worked as an assistant director at HARYOU-ACT. Harlem CORE member Joe Jackson was her assistant.
As the director for the Bronx Community Corporation in the late 1960's and early 1970's, she had New York CORE member NIkki Springer as her assistant. By the 1980's, Harrington was a deputy administrator for the Human Resources Administration.
She is also a founding/active member of the Long Island Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.

Because there has been some misunderstanding as to Ms. Harrington's history, I am putting my sources here below. They are documents that come from the national CORE office. Just click on the link below her photo.
