CORE began as an integrated group espousing a philosophy of non-violence and racial co-existence. Heavily influenced by both Gandhi and Christianity, their propaganda is reflective of their ideology. Their literature often contained illustrations of Gandhi on the on the front page, as seen in the pamphlets, 'This is CORE' and 'CORE Rules for Action'.
Their logo, as seen on the 'Freedom Now' button, is made up of the colors black and white, symbolic of the membership, which was by 1961 overwhelmingly made up of Blacks and Whites. There are very few members of other ethnicities, although Harlem CORE did count a few Latinos, mostly Puerto Ricans, as members. This speaks as much to the city's demographics at the time as it does CORE's 'audience'.
